USS Joins Friends of Bolin Creek for a Live Staking Workshop
On February 1st, volunteers gathered for a meaningful hands-on experience at a live staking workshop hosted by the Friends of Bolin Creek and NC State Extension Service. USS was proud to participate in this effort to help restore and protect our local waterways. The event took place along the southwestern side of the Bolin Creek area.
Live staking is an effective, natural method used to stabilize stream banks and prevent erosion. During the event, participants learned how to plant two foot stakes from native trees (Silky dogwood, Ninebark, Buttonbush, Elderberry and Silky Willow) that will take root and strengthen the stream bank over time. This technique not only helps to reinforce the banks but also enhances habitat quality for local wildlife.
This event marked a continuation of USS’s collaboration with the Friends of Bolin Creek. Last November, we joined forces to lead a volunteer workday and student planting in the same area. Seeing the progress made over the past few months and adding to the restoration efforts was an inspiring experience for all involved.
We extend our gratitude to the Friends of Bolin Creek for hosting this event and to all the dedicated volunteers who participated. By working together, we can make a lasting impact on the health of our streams and local ecosystems.
