Carrboro: Fairoaks Community/Waverly Forest Lane

Project Overview

In the Fair Oaks Community on Waverly Forest Drive there is a stream that had significant bank erosion due to discharges from two drop inlets and several curb drain inlets. The two drop inlets had significant sediment delivery to them from the upland areas they serve. One of the inlets had been completely covered in sediment and was no longer functioning as designed. Consequently, the two adjacent homes were receiving the redirected flow. Evidence showed significant damage to the structures due to excess runoff being delivered to the foundations as well as significant sediment being delivered to a third drop inlet downslope.

A swale was installed at the drop inlets. Streambank stabilization practices were installed on 95 feet of one side of the stream. The stream buffer area was being mowed and the HOA agreed to stop all maintenance practices to allow this area to naturalize. The area was seeded with native riparian buffer mix and 100 tublings of native Sambucus canadensis (Elderberry) and Lindera benzoin (Northern Spicebush) were planted.

Funding and Support

Urban Sustainability Solutions received funding for Cost Share of Stormwater Practice from a grant funded by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality through Section 319 of the Federal Clean Water Act, administered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
