Wild Oak Lane Regenerative Stormwater Conveyance (RSC) Project
Project Overview
The Wild Oak Lane neighborhood in Carrboro has implemented a Regenerative Stormwater Conveyance (RSC) system to manage rainwater runoff more effectively and protect the local environment. This project addresses the challenge of stormwater runoff that feeds into Bolin Creek, ensuring sustainable and environmentally friendly water management.
Community Involvement
On June 12th, Urban Sustainability Solutions along with Jeanette O’Connor led fifteen students and seven parents in a volunteer planting day. Participants planted 188 natives, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the RSC system. The surrounding neighbors have committed to the ongoing care and watering of these plants, demonstrating strong community support and involvement.
In November, 29 students across 8 Orange County high schools took part in a planting workday as part of our Growing More Than Rain Gardens program. Students spent time increasing the vegetation throughout the rocky ephemeral channel that feeds into Bolin Creek. They also took a walk around the surrounding neighborhood to identify other locations where stormwater control would be beneficial to homeowners and the community at large.
Technical Details
RSC Function: The RSC at Wild Oak Lane stabilizes and attenuates stormwater runoff into an ephemeral channel that directly connects to Bolin Creek.
Construction: The project involved regrading a swale into a trapezoidal shape covered with fescue sod. This swale connects to a riffle and pool sequence at the head of the RSC.
Planting: The native plants were carefully selected to support the ecological function of the stormwater control measure and were planted with the help of community volunteers.
Funding and Support
The project was made possible through a combination of funding sources, including:
The Town of Carrboro
The Bolin Creek Homeowners Association
Contributions from five adjacent homeowners
This collaborative financial support ensured the successful completion and sustainability of the project.
Conclusion
The Wild Oak Lane RSC project is a prime example of community-driven environmental stewardship. By integrating native plants and innovative stormwater management techniques, the project not only addresses local runoff issues but also enhances the natural beauty and ecological health of the area. This initiative serves as a model for other communities looking to implement sustainable stormwater solutions.
